Finding Relevance in the midst of Crisis -Part 7

Be in the right place

Whenever there is a crisis, people seek answers but where do they go for answers?

We all desire to have the right answers and as quick as possible but there are always more questions that come up in our pursuit of answers. Will the answers be available there? Will the right people that could help be found there?

Everyone seems to have an idea of a place to get solutions to some certain problems. They are most likely to go to that place when that need occurs.

When a car is faulty, you look for a mechanic and you are likely to find one on time if you look in the right place. You may want to contact the manufacturer of the car or read through the manual to get information on how to get help or call the car dealer that sold the car to you that has left a contact in case things go wrong or probably visit a local garage where you will usually find mechanics that solve car problems.

You may also search a telephone directory of businesses for the required solution or do an online search for the closest place to get the help you need. I guess you may have some more ideas.

There is a possibility, however, that there is a very skilled mechanic that can solve car problems but he/she is not in the right place. Whenever a mechanic is sought for he/she cannot be found. He could be in the wrong environment, with the wrong people or doing things not related to the problems he could solve.

You may have observed the closeness of the locations and relationships between those that fix different car problems and those that sell the various parts needed. You must have also noticed that a University hospital has all kinds of health professionals on board that are skilled in different parts of the human body. That is their environment, and they are relevant because they are in the right place. The place that their help is required and could easily be sought.

Everyone is looking for solutions but usually each one seeks such from a place and only those available in that place are considered for relevance. It does not matter how good you are if you are not where you can be found you cannot be relevant to those that need you.

At the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, the whole world was searching for solutions to the different problems. Many governments sought for advisers, healthcare professionals, personal protective equipment (PPE) manufacturers, statisticians, scientists, pharmaceutical companies, and so on. Businesses, communities, and families also sought for solutions to the effects of the unprecedented crisis, searching for help wherever it could be found.

Are you in the right place? Are you where you can be found? Do people know the problems you can solve? Do you have proofs of what you can do? Have you made efforts to make people aware of the problems you can solve?

You may be frustrated because you are in the wrong place. Those that need you cannot find you and you are frustrated thinking that you are not relevant. You may need to change and find your place.  Your place is where you need to be, where you are needed to make a difference. There is a place for everyone to make a difference with what you have and who you are.

I remember the story of Julius Berger, a German construction company that was incorporated in 1950. The company was struggling to find relevance until they found a place in Nigeria and undertook their first project in August 1965.

They have since then built crucial bridges, key road networks, important buildings and vital landmarks all-round the country. The company is now the leading construction company in the nation. They are celebrating 50 years of incorporation this year and years of relevance as they have continually provided solutions in a place where their help was needed.

There are so many people and organisations struggling to find relevance in the wrong location. You may have what it needed but your location is the reason for your frustration. What you have is needed and will be appreciated in a place that is meant for you.

You may be frustrated and tolerated where you are not needed but there is a place where what you have or who you are is needed and will be appreciated, that could be the place you need to look for, and the place you need to be.

It may not be the people that need to change, it may not be what you do that needs to change, it may not be the environment that needs to change, it might just be you that needs to change your location. There is someone somewhere that needs you and until you meet; the frustration may continue.

It may be helpful to think of what you have and where it could make a difference and begin to make changes that will help you connect with those that need you. People need you but you can only become relevant to them when you are in the right place where you are most needed to provide solutions to the problems they are experiencing.

To be continued next week, don’t miss it.
